K.B.I: Respect for others

II. Learning Content:
Music: Sound and Silence

Reference

Materials: pictures that express different messages (street signs, restroom signs, images of facial expressions), cd player, musical sounds

III. Procedure:
A. Introduction

1. Motivation:
* The teacher will introduce different hand signals to the class (hand signal for going to the rest room, fixing of chairs, passing of notebooks, etc.)

* The teacher will show pictures that express different messages and elicit responses from pupils as to what these pictures convey.

2. Statement of the Aim:

In our lesson today, you are expected to recognize the different ways of expressing messages, identify the different kinds of sounds, value the importance of giving respect to the people around you, and participate in games involving musical sounds.

B. Interaction
1. Presentation:

* The teacher will now play different musical sounds and ask pupils to distinguish these sounds (sound of a bell, sound of a person walking, sound of a dog barking, etc.)

* Discussion

2. Comparison and Abstraction:
* After having the pupils listen to different sounds, the teacher will select some pictures and ask the pupils to distinguish if the picture shows sound or silence. Selected pupils will be asked to post this on the board.

* Pupils will then be asked to distinguish sound from silence. Pupils should be able to share that sound is a distinctive noise or music while silence is the absence of sound.

3. Generalization:
The teacher will ask the pupils to pick a partner. Partners should try to relay to each other their answers to the questions without talking. The pupils will be asked the following questions:

* Did you find doing this exercise easy or hard? Why?
* What did you learn about sound and silence?
* Do you agree that there is a time to talk or make noise and there is a time to be silent or be quiet? Why?
* When the teacher asks you to be silent or quiet, what does it mean?
* Why does your teacher ask you to be quiet?

C. Integration:
1. Application:
Do the activities in the book.

2. Valuing:
Ask the following questions to the pupils and have brainstorming about it:
* Why is it important to be quiet or to listen attentively when someone else is talking?
* Do you think that this is a sign of respect?
* How do you show respect for others?
* Why is it important to give respect to the people around you?

3. Assignment:
Study at home about sound and silence
